Ubon Ratchathani means “Royal Lotus City.” The city has a population of 200,000 people. Mao Kham Phong founded the city in the 18th century. He was Ubon Ratchathani’s first ruler. The city became a province in 1792, making it the largest province in the area, until 1972. Ubon Ratchatani is situated on the Mun River’s Northern Bank. Japan used Ubon Ratchathani as a prisoner of war camp during World War II. In the the Vietnam War, the United States established the Ubon Royal Thai Air Force Base that is now an airport.
One of the festivals that Ubon Ratchatani has is the Candle Festival. The festival is held each July. The festival’s purpose is to indicate the first of the rainy season for the Buddhists. This rainy season is also called Wan Kao Phansa. During this moment, the candles are brought to central park, which is located in the middle of the city to be decorated and lighted in the night time.
