The most culturally city in Thailand is Chiang Mai and it is on the northern side. Its location is 700 kilometers north of Bangkok. This city is home to Chiang Mai Airport which is the main gateway to the north of Thailand. The airport has two terminals, one for domestic flights and the other for international flights. The fact that this airport is the major gateway to this side of the region, it opens the scenic beauty and the rich culture of the region. By this, it plays a very vital role in promoting tourism and travel throughout the northern region. When in Chiang Mai, you do not have to use trains and buses to crisscross the region because the airport offers a number of domestic flights by opening many routes. You can fly to any of the 8 domestic destinations that the airport serves. Most of the flights from this airport however are bound for Bangkok where up to twenty four flights can can depart to this capital city. These flights to Bangkok are operated by Air Asia, Thai Airways and Bangkok Air. This competition helps to keep prices at a very affordable level.
Apart from domestic and regional flights, international carriers also operate from Chiang Mai Airportto destinations like Singapore, Taipei in Taiwan, Seoul in South Korea, Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia, Kunming in China and Laos. All these destinations are served by a single carrier and that rises the prices a great deal because of the monopoly.
To get to the airport from Chiang Mai Town you should go south on highway 1141. Taxis are not in abundance but the most available means are the tuk tuks and songthaews that take people to and from the airport.
