Karpathos is listed as the second largest in the Greek Dodecanese islands. It is a part of the Karpathos regional unit. The island is southwest of Rhodes, about forty-seven kilometers. Karpathos is located in the Mediterranean. The highest point of Karpathos is Mount Lastos. Karpathos’s climate is pretty warm. The country’s average temperature is twenty degrees Celsius. So, if you are planning to travel to Karpathos, wear a t-shirt, shorts, sunglasses, and a cap. The island has beaches, so that you can swim in the water. Bring a swimming suit and tanning lotion. The sun can get pretty hot on the beach. In historical times, Karpathos was connected with Rhodes. Karpathians fought in the Peloponnesian War in 431 B.C. against Sparta. Eventually, they won their independence in 400 B.C. During 1821-1822, in the Greek War of Independence, Karpathos was independent. However, the island later fell to the Ottoman Empire.
In the Italo-Turkish War of 1911-1912, the Italians took over Karpathos. Later in the Paris Peace Treaties of 1947, Italy deeded Karpathos to Greece. Currently, the island has over 6,500 inhabitants. The summer months are popular in Karpathos, because many tourists, Greeks, and Greek-Americans travel to Karpathos. There are beaches on the four coasts. Located on the East Coast of Karpathos are Amoopi, Karpathos Beach, Kathos Latos, Achata, and Apella are the beaches. On the Southern Coast of Karpathos, Damatria, Devils Bay, Agriopotamos, which is a nude beach, and Diakoftis are located. On the North Coast, Arkasa Leucadius and Finiki are located. On the West Coast, Vanada, Forokli, and Diafani are located. To get around Karpathos, you need to have a car. In order to rent a car from the local airport, you need to have identification, such as a driver’s license, a passport, or a driver’s license. You must be over the age of twenty-five to rent a car.
