Munich Airport, also referred to as Flughafen Munchen in German is strategically located about 28.5 kilometers on the north eastern side of the Munich city, Germany. It acts as the major flight operations hub for the two major airlines serving it; Star Alliance and Lufthansa. The airport was named after one prominent politician Josef Franz and it is also located near the old city, Freising. Four municipalities border the airport namely Freising, Marzling, Oberding, and Halbergmoos.
Over the last couple of years, the passenger numbers at the airport have been increasing exponentially. For instance, between the year 1995 and 2006, the number of passengers served by the airport doubled from 15 million to 30 million per year. This was despite the 11th September attacks which occurred in 2001 and 2002. It is also worth noting that Munich Airport handles over twice as many passengers as the numbers are recorded for the state’s third busy airport. Berlin Airport is however expected to add up more pressure when it becomes the sole airport in the city later in the year 2013.

Moreover, it is also the sixth busiest airport within Europe and handled over 37 million passengers in the year 2011 alone. When it comes to international passengers traffic, this airport is ranked the 12th busiest and more so was the 27th relatively busiest in the whole world in the year 2011.
