Donetsk Airport is located in the Donetsk city of Ukraine, northwest to the city's center just 10 kilometers away. Over time, the airport has undergone numerous changes, and so in prone to much activity around it. After being built in the 1940's and 50's, Donetsk Airport has had major construction in 1973 and then recently in 2011 and 2012.
The official name of the airport is Sergey Prokofiev International Airport, and is a tribute to the 20th century music composure Sergi Prokofiev, a native Donetsk himself.
Adjacent to the Kalmius River, Donetsk is an industrial city with a major scientific and economic powerhouse. In history, it goes that the land was first discovered by John Hughes, a very prominent Welsh businessman and was then named Yuzovka. It is John who constructed many coal mines in the area and a steel plant. Guess one can say, that the work drive of the city is as old as the city itself. Over time, the city was renamed Stalino and from that, finally Donetsk.
Currently though, the city isn't much of a tourist spot, but can be reached from Donetsk Airport. And from there, one can rent a car and discover the rest of the city. You can easily find the car rental companies spread out in the city on important locations, including the airport.
Donetsk is unofficially known as the 'City of Million Roses' and is as delightful as the name given. With currently as many as 2,000,000 inhabitants, the city is the 5th largest city of Ukraine. The one feature that stands out is it's sport. Being a large sport center, the city has ended up building infrastructures that have held highly reputed games as UEFA, Boxing, Tennis, Davis Cup, etc.
