Saint Pierre Airport is located at a distance of 5.5 kilometers towards the northwest side of Saint Pierre town in Reunion. There are two airports in the Island and Saint Pierre is the smaller of the two. The airport is a popular transportation hub among travelers heading towards this heavenly holiday island in the Indian Ocean on the east side of Madagascar. This airport directly serves the second biggest and most important town of Reunion.
Passengers arriving at Saint Pierre Airport without making specific arrangements for onward travel can opt for the shuttle bus service connecting them directly to their hotels in town. Shuttle bus service provides the connectivity to many important destinations in the vicinity, including Saint Pierre, Saint Louis, Avirans, Saint Leu, Saint Joseph, Saint Philippe and others.
Another cheaper option is via SEMITTEL public buses which links the airport directly to the town center of Saint Pierre. Taxi services are also available from the airport to town as well as for getting around/ Taxis are found in abundance in the Island but their rates can differ from reasonable to very steep, especially for airport transfers. However, if you are dreaming of a perfect holiday in Reunion the best way to spend it is with a hire car at your disposal.
With your own set of wheels it is easier to set your own travel pace and follow your heart as you explore and experience this tropical beach paradise. Hire cars can be arranged before you leave Saint Pierre Airport as there are several reputed car hire agencies operating from the airport.
Reunion is a comparatively small Island but it has more than its fair share of vehicles on roads at any time of the day. Especially during peak hours major roads in town areas can become congested with traffic. In many parts of the Island the roads are tarmac and have only a single lane for each direction.
There is only one major road with four lanes skirting the entire island. It also cuts across Saint Pierre linking with Saint Benoit via an interior route. Some of the interior roads feature steep slopes and sharp turns and drivers are advised to take optimum caution when driving in these terrains. The rainy season is not an ideal time to tackle Reunion roads. So if you are visiting between December and March you may want to consider obtaining a hire car with driver instead of choosing a self drive option.
