Mercedita Airport is an important airport in Puerto Rico. It is located about 6 kilometers on the eastern side of the central business district in Ponce. The airport has got only one runway and covers a total surface area of about 262.2 acres. Ever since inception, the number of passengers passing through the airport has increased greatly.
The Mercedita Airport was officially inaugurated to the status of an international airport in the year 1990. This is the largest airport in the entire Puerto Rico with regards to numbers of military personnel operating here. It is also the second largest with regards to military freight. According the federal aviation administration department records, the airport registered a total number of 110, 159 passengers in the year 2008. The numbers have been on an exponential increase ever since then. The number of international and domestic passengers has increased greatly mainly due to the many tourist attraction sites in this region.
Originally built in the year 1939, Mercedita Airport was just an ordinary aerodrome that was mainly used for purposes of airborne irrigation in the sugarcane fields. In fact the airport was named after the owner of one sugarcane plantation. There is no doubt that this airport has grown a great deal. One of the notable airlines that serve this airport is JetBlue Airways. The airline runs flight operations between New York, Orlando and Mercedita, Puerto Rico. Other carriers that operate here include Cape Air, Carnival Airlines, American Airlines, Continental Airlines, Delta connection, Spirit Airlines and the Eastern Airlines.
