Alesund was founded in the tenth century A.D. However, most of the town has been built during the early twentieth century. The city is a part of the art noveau movement, which focuses on new art of the twentieth and the twenty-first century. The city has a maritime climate, having windy and mild winters. Since the city is located in a cool environment, you might want to wear long sleeved t-shirts or a sweater, warm jeans, boots or tennis shoes.
Since Alesund is a port city, it is a center for fishing. Fishermen catch fish by the bay and sell their fish to merchants and people who are willing to buy them to cook in their restaurants or at home. Oil was later discovered in the region during the 1970s. Soon, oil exploration boats were sent on the North Sea to find oil. The city is a tourist attraction, being a port city for cruise ships which arrive in Alesund twice a day.
If you are into art, Jugendstilsenteret, the Norwegian Centre of Art Nouveau Architecture is located in Alesund. Jugendstilsenteret is a museum which tells about the town fire and the art noveau that the city of Alesund exibits.
Shopping is easy in Alesund. Many shops exist in the town square speciifically located close to City Hall and Aalesunds Storsenter. The currency in Norway is the Norwegian Krone (NOK). When you get to the airport or to an ATM machine, you can convert United States dollars (or the currency of your home country) to Norwegian Krones. Whenever you travel to Alesund’s airport, be sure that you have your passport, valid visa, and driver’s license with you while you are travelling. You must be twenty-five years or older to rent a car.
