The urban city and the rural landscape was consolidated in 2006 to form present day Rovaniemi. The name of the city is considered to be formed by Saami dialect. Since the Stone Age, there has been occupation in Rovaniemi. Slash and burn agriculture was practiced between 750 to 530 B.C. The Sami people are considered to be Rovaniemi’s indigenous people. Fishing and hunting were popular during the fifteenth century. Rovaniemi’s population began to grow in the 1800s when gold was discovered and logging was popular for building log cabins. In World War II, the Moscow Agreement was signed by Finland. Thus, there was war between Finland and Germany. As a result of the war, nearly ninety percent of all of the buildings were destroyed in Rovaniemi.
Today, tourism is important to Rovaniemi. Many restaurants and hotels are located in Rovanemi’s city center and city’s outskirts. Rovaniemi is the capital of Lapland Province.
