Koh Tao, Thailand : One of the Best Islands in the World

Thailand is one of the top tourist destinations in the world and it’s no wonder why with so many beautify island to visit. Koh Tao, situated in the Gulf of Thailand, has become one of the most visited. It is a relative small island but it is easily accessible, has relaxed and energetic nightlife, and is packed with watersports.

One of the best beaches in Thailand, if not the world, can be found just off Koh Tao on the island Koh Nang Yuan (pictured above). It’s a 15 minute ride away on a Long Tail Boat and well worth a trip. This island is actually a private island, but tourist are welcome for a small fee.

Scuba Koh Tao

Scuba diving has become very popular on this island and it’s a key attraction for tourists every year. It is actually rated high as a key destination for this water sport globally. This place has shallow and clear waters that have a huge number of marine creatures as well as corals that any diver will be pleased with.

The soothing atmosphere complements that very well, making it a must-visit destination in Thailand for any tourist. Millions of people, most of them divers are recorded as visiting this island just to experience its serene environment. It’s actually the second most popular scuba destination globally.

Coral Koh Tao

Koh Tao is eco-friendly and a globally acclaimed breeding ground for green turtles and hawksbill. This is a reason enough for you to visit the island. Coral reefs are well preserved and efforts to grow them are always in motion. Have a boat ride and it will help you enjoy the best of the island’s scenery. It will take you around gorgeous bays and some of the most beautiful beaches that this world can offer. There is no other way of spending your time at Koh Tao than staying undersea. Very few islands offer you that but Koh Tao will go to the extreme in making sure you enjoy it to the full.

There is also an option of hiking to the islands summit that you can try out, it has been popular with tourists for many years. If you like Yoga, there is the opportunity to do that here too.

Precautions

As a visitor, you might find the going tough on Koh Tao but it will be different once you are prepared. For instance, mosquitoes are very active at dusk and dawn so you must be armed with repellants. If you are planning to go scuba diving, it is advisable not to drink alcohol the previous night while driving motorbikes in Koh Tao should be with caution. It can land you in trouble with law enforcers if you are careless on the roads.

Due to the high cost of electricity at the island, you are supposed to switch off anything that consumes power when not in use whilst littering is prohibited. Anything ranging from cigarettes to papers should be properly disposed of. You are not supposed to touch anything when you are snorkeling or diving. Regulations demand that you take a look whether it is the corals or even turtles. There is a scarcity of water at the island and any form of wastage is discouraged. Never leave taps running when not in use.

Getting to Koh Tao

Regardless of where you are, accessing Koh Tao Island will be very easy for you. There are trains, buses and boats which combine well from one point to another until you reach the island. The mode of transport you choose will depend on where you are coming from but the key ferries leave from Chumphon if you are coming from the north or Don Sak (via Koh Samui) if you are departing from the south.
