Located on the eastern side of Hawaii Island Hilo is the town where you can start your tour of the big Island. The island is characterized by active volcanoes, waterfalls and orchid farms. There are a number of things to enjoy while here, including a visit to the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. The main airport here is Hilo Airport which is strategically positioned close to Hilo Bay and it serves Hilo and the eastern side of the Island. It receives most of its flights mainly from Honolulu. The major airlines are Hawaiian Airlines and go! If you want to get to the airport from the Northern or Southern side, you should use Highway 11, branch east and take Airport Road on which you will drive for about two miles and eventually you will end up at the airport.
Public transport on Hawaii Island is minimal. All visitors rent vehicles from the many car hire companies after they arrive at the airport. You should make arrangements for a car before you arrive because at times special events or weather conditions can quickly affect the availability of the vehicle making you stranded. Drivers can park at the Cellular Telephone Waiting Area free of charge for only one hour as they wait for arriving passengers. You will get your parking ticket automatically from the ticket dispensers at the gate of the parking area, the ticket will be used to speed up the payment process when you have your money or credit card ready.
Arriving passengers leave through jetways and down to the ground level via an escalator, elevator or the staircase. Luggage claim and checking at Hilo Airport is located in the General Lyman Terminal on the ground level. The luggage areas for specific flights are A for Hawaiian Airlines, B for Island Air, C for go! Airlines and D for Mokulele Airlines.
