The Republic of Macedonia is located in the central Balkan Peninsula in the southeast Europe. The country is one of the successor states of the former Yugoslavia. This small country is the heart of Balkan Peninsula.
Skopje the capital city’s existence dates back to about 2500 years. The city features breathtaking modern luxurious hotels along the cobbled Ottoman streets, cozy cafes, shopping malls and at the same time grand ancient Yugoslav-era buildings, primeval Byzantine churches and magnificent Turkish mosques. The main attractions of the city are forested hills of Mount Vodno, Kale Fortress, the Ottoman Era Old Bazar and River Vardar.
Another beautiful city in Macedonia is Ohrid which is the stunning lakeside point of the country. The picturesque beauty of the city has drawn attention from world over. You can enjoy a variety of water sports, fishing and boating in the Lake Ohrid. The city has also preserved its history so you can also see ruins of Macedonia’s earlier kingdoms. Samuil’s Fortress, Antique Theatre, St. Sophia and St. Naum’s churches are some of the famous archaeological sites in Ohrid.
Macedonia is rich in mountain ranges. They have been categorized into two groups: Rhodope and Dinaric. Rhodope consists of ancient and larger mountains while Dinaric is the younger group of mountains. To name a few, the Jakupica Massif, the Baba Massif, the Shara Mountain and Korab are all Macedonian mountain ranges. There are several national parks that have preserved the flora and fauna of Macedonia. National Park of Pelister is one such that has green, watered forests, unique geology and fresh water streams river and glacial lakes. National Park of Mavrovo situated on the western –central part of the country has the highest mountain peaks of Macedonia. The beautiful mountainous landscapes beneath which the beautiful lake Mavrovo lies are also the best place for skiing.
